The White Sox have won, so is this it for Ozzie Guillen? (During Chicago’s late season swoon, he said that he might call it a career if his team took the World Series.) His players must not want him to stick around — they swept. Guillen hasn’t backed off in recent days: “It’s still in my mind. I would like to win first and think about it. It’s not because I want to quit; it’s because I would do something I always wanted to do, winning with this ball club. The main thing to me is winning here. Then I will make up my mind.”
In the early 1990s, the Republican party swept into Congressional power as the country grew frustrated with the growing corruption of the Democrats. Prominent among those who lost their moral compasses was Dan Rostenkowski, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. His name was rarely uttered in public after his indictment and subsequent 15 months in prison.
Now, it seems as if half of the GOP is on the verge of being indicted, including bombastic Majority Leader, Tom Delay. (Jonathan Alter’s brief, but interesting piece here: Tom DeLay’s House of Shame - Newsweek National News - MSNBC.com.) Recent events have bolstered two cliches in Washington:
- Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. -Lord Acton
- Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. -George Santayana
Outside the beltway, I think voters must feel increasingly as I do with regards to voting: Damned if we do, damned if we don’t.
Study says homeopathic medicines don’t work - Alternative Medicine - MSNBC.com
Why is it that so many fans of homeopathy are suspicious of the drug industry, but not the supplement industry. The former is subject to tighter regulation and requires scientific scrutiny. Granted, neither drug approval nor prescription are flawless, but why trust the makers of supplements who need not expose their products to rigorous scientific testing? Yes, the big bad pharma companies want to make a buck, but does the supplement manufacturer have no interest in money?
