The Gaza Mess
Mort Zukerman has an insightful editorial about the problems in Gaza.
First, the irony. President Bush, whose many malapropisms and linguistic gaffes are well-chronicled, called out John Kerry for mangling a joke. Bush said, “Anybody who is in a position to serve this country ought to understand the consequences of words.” One might have assumed that the President would be sheepish in calling attention to such verbal missteps. But, in his own words from October 11, 2006, I suppose “One has a stronger hand when there’s more people playing your same cards.”
SI’s Phil Taylor questions Derek Jeter’s leadership. I didn’t think any mainstream sportswriter had the cojones to do so. Whether it’s true or not, kudos to Taylor for at least opening up the subject to debate.
I can’t read in a moving car, even when someone else is driving. All joking aside, I find reading in the car quickly makes me nauseated. There’s something about all the motion…. So what George Bush does is impressive. The president claims to have read 60 books this years despite having — in his words — “an epileptic reading list.” The first time I heard the clip below (fast forward to 1:49), I was sure he said “epileptic.” After listening a few more times, I thought maybe he said “eclectic” (his pronunciation sounds more like “eck-ell-ectic”), but am not sure. Take a listen and let me know what you think.
Comments like those written by Dr. Ghazi Hamad are an incredibly rarity. If accountability is to make its way into Gaza, I suppose there’s hope that it can be uncovered in Washington as well.
